War Hawks & Doves
Southerners (John C. Calhoun) and Westerners (Henry Clay) who wanted revenge on
British for attacking U.S. ships and inciting war on the frontier
• They also believed it would give them an excuse to expand, conquer, and control Canada.
• They still believed the British were arming the frontier Indians.
• New England Federalists (“Doves”) did not want to go to war=loss of trade + could lose.
Battle of Tipacanoe
Tecumseh and Prophet led the fight against “white invasion” of NW Territory.
• William Henry Harrison, Gov. of Indiana Territory (and future president), believes
Tecumseh is a serious threat and leads soldiers to Prophet’s town on Tippecanoe Creek
to suppress the organizing Indians. Defeat Prophet-led Natives
• Tecumseh did not reach his goal, as he does not win the war and loses much support from other natives.
Treaty of Ghent
Ended the War of 1812. Conquer lands returned + major issues will be dealt w/ after peace.
