What were James’ religious beliefs?
James was raised as a Calvinist, despite his mother being a Catholic.
He believed in double predestination, but also wanted a more inclusive and broader Church.
He disliked Puritanism as he thought it was sectarian and elite.
He also did not like Presbyterianism, as he saw it as a challenge to royal power.
When was the Millenary Petition presented to James and what did it ask?

The Puritans demanded fewer hymn, better sermons and fewer popish practices such as bowing at the name of Jesus. James disagreed with the abolition of episcopacy, as he said ‘No bishop, no King’.
However, James agreed to a new translation of the Bible, reform of the High Commission and limiting the power of the bishops to some respect
