Problem: Karma
- The human sould (jiva) is weighed down by the matter (ajiva) of Karma, which traps it in samsara
- All actions lead into karma, all karma is bad thus all actions are bad
“As a tortoise draws its limbs into its own body, so a wise man should draw in his hands and feet, his mind and five organs of sense, the effect of his bad karma, and every bad use of language.”
Cause: Activity
- Almost all action leads to karma since almost all action entails some form harm
The supreme soul is free from birth, old age, and death; he is supreme and devoid of karma. He is free from obstructions, merit, demerit, and rebirth, and is eternal, steady, and independent.
Goal: Becoming a Jina
- Liberation from bondage to karma means joining Mahavira and other Jinas in eternal bliss
The 5 Vows (abbreviated):
“I renounce all killing of living things.
I renounce all lying speech.
I renounce taking anything not given.
I renounce sexual pleasure.
I renounce all attachments.”
Solution: Ahimsa (non-harm)
- The primary means of overcoming karma is to avoid all harmful actions especially physically violence
