Why did Booth kill Lincoln?
Booth was a Southern sympathizer.
Booth wanted to re-ignite the Civil War by killing the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State.
Booth was against the abolition of slavery.
How did Booth gain access to the President?
Lincoln had only 1 bodyguard!
His bodyguard was missing, alleged to be at a local tavern.
Booth knew the layout of Ford’s Theatre and was able to gain access because he was a well-known actor, even had mail sent there.
Who was Booth?
Booth came from a prominent Maryland family of actors.
He was a fervent believer in the South’s cause.
His brother Edwin was pro-Union!
Why not kill only Lincoln?
Booth planned to put the North into upheaval.
He originally wanted to only kidnap Lincoln.
He changed mind.
Failed attempt!
Booth made an attempt at the President on March 17.
Booth assembled his men by the side of the road as Lincoln was supposed to visit a hospital.
Lincoln changed plans.

Vice President Andrew Johnson

What happened?
Lincoln was shot dead.
VP Andrew Johnson was untouched.
Sec of State William Seward was severely injured but lived.
Aftermath
Booth was shot to death.
Atzerodt and Powell were tried, convicted and hanged.
