Jacobs Engine Brake Flashcards
Jake brake is found in what year trucks?
95-01, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2016
What is jake brake?
A hydraulic engine attachment that, when energized, altars the engine exhaust valves operation which converts the diesel engine into an air compressor. This is accomplished by prematurely opening the exhaust valves near the top of the compression stroke releasing the compression pressure to exhaust. The result is an engine retarding effort to drive wheels.
Reference
Jake brake.
- uses the energy of the engine compression stroke to provide vehicle retardation.
- Converts the engine to an energy absorbing device to reduce vehicle speed.
- accomplished by hydraulic circuit that opens the exhaust valves near the end of the compression stroke.
- provideds maximum retarding power at rated speed therefore, gear selection is iimportant.
- effective tool that can reduce brake wear if used properly
Jake brake control consist of the following:
How many position selector switch?
3 positions
Jake brake uses.
- descending grades
- driving in city traffic
- when approaching stop lights
- whenever vehicle retarding is required
Reference
There is no time limit with respect to the operation of the jake brake. The engines cooling system will continually absorb and dissipate the heat generated by its continual use.
Reference
Jake brake activation.
- it activates and deactivates in less than ___ of a second.
- the engine should be fairly warm before engaging the jake brake. The engine preheater water temperature is sufficient.
- Turn on jake brake switch located on the dashboard.
- when the throttle pedal is released, jake brake will activate.
1/4 of a second
3 position switch on jake brake.
Low- activates two cylinders for medium engage retarding.
Medium- activates four cylinders for moderate engine retarding.
High- activates six cylinders for maximum engine retarding.
Reference
Jake brake wet streets.
- Do not enage the jake brake on wet streets.
- the jake brake additional braking effort on the drive wheels (duals) can cause them to lock up which could result in an uncontrollable skid.
Reference
Jake brake aerial operations.
- do not engage the jake brake during aerial operations.
- this practice causes undesirable retardation, possible engine and component damage, and engine stalling.
