Braking System Flashcards
1
Q
- Braking system is equipped with a dual circuit air brake (primary and secondary) system
- rearspring brake parking system
- antilock braking system 2000-2016
- Auxiliary front axle parking brake system on 2000-2016.

Q
Braking Downhill or heavy braking- always rely on the braking effect of: - engine - engine brake - exhaust brake - retarder

Q
Braking
- If service brakes are required, apply the brakes in short durations of ___-___ seconds rather than continuous application. This will minimize heat buildup and reduce the possibility of brake fade.
- LTI- NO “pumping” the brake pedal because it may deplete the brake systems air reservoir supply.
A
5-10 seconds

Q
Brakes. Air circuts.
- Front axle and the rear axle brake circuits are each supplied air by seperate air reservoirs.
- Safe operation is between 90-120 PSI
- Secondary system supplies air to the front axle.
- Primary system supplies air to the rear axle.

Q
Air brake warning lights.
- When pressure drops below approximately 65PSI (LTI) and 60 PSI (PIERCE) a warning buzzer and light will come on. As soon as system air pressure increases past 65-75 PSI, the warning light and buzzer will shut-off.

Q
Antilock braking system 2000-2016.
- Automatically applies and releases the brakes during low traction or panic brake applications to prevent wheel lock-up.
- Improves both braking efficiency and steering control.
- integral to the air brake system and therefore cannot be turned off or overridden.
- when braking, always maintain a firm steady pressure on the brake foot pedal to achieve the necessary change in speed or to bring the apparatus to a complete stop.
- When the ABS applies the telma retarder is automatically deactivated.

Q
Parking brakes.
- Spring brakes are located on the rear axle
- If air pressure is reduced to approximately 40PSI in both systems, the spring brake valve will automatically apply.

Braking system
Chock wheels.
- When parking the apparatus, whether on level terrain or on a grade, always chock the wheels.
- Dept. pollicy- always chock the wheels when on scene

Q
Braking system.
Air dryer.
- Removes moisture and contaminants from pressurized air, which comes from compressor before it reaches air reservoirs.
- Moisture collected on the surface of desiccant pellets is discharged out the bottom of the air dryer each time the governor unloads.
- Replaced every other year (Pierce 2-3 years)

Braking system
Auxiliary front wheel locks. 2000-2016
- Uses air brake system PSI to keep the front brakes applied.
- Used to augment rear spring parking brakes in event the rear parking brakes cannot hold the apparatus on a steep incline.
- If there is a leak in the system the front wheel locks may fail.
- Must be used in conjunction with the maxis

Disc brake calipers lube.
- Do not use lithium grease because it will not provide adequate lubrication
- S&M lube during annual ladder test and brake replacement.
