Jacob Marley Flashcards
Why was Jacob Marley important in ACC?
Marley plays a central role in convincing Scrooge that he must change his life or face an eternity of suffering.
“I wear the chain I forged in life,”
Metaphor - he is forced to wear this ‘chain’ in the afterlife to remind him of his neglect of others and to encourage redemption
He encourages Scrooge to change his action so he wont suffer like him/
‘Mankind was my business’
Metaphor - Highlights that Marley wanted his ‘business’ to help people and should of cared more about them and less about making money
‘That you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate’
Noun ‘Chance’ - Marley hopes that he can prevent Scrooge from having to endure the same fate in the afterlife.
Marley again feels that feels that Scrooge needs to make a change and obtain sympathy and acknowledgment of the lower classes and therefore avoid Marleys unrestful and isolated fate.
