Why is the Ghost of Christmas Past important?
The Ghost shows Scrooge events from his past in hopes of shedding light on how Scrooge became bitter and miserly and to remind him that he was not always that way. If the Ghost can help Scrooge remember who he once was, there may still be hope for him.
‘A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.’
Adjective ‘Solitary’ - suggest why Scrooge is the way he is now.
He was neglected by society as a child so feels he can’t join society now, as he’s afraid of rejection.
By seeing himself as a young boy, he starts to feel empathy towards others.
‘Another idol has displaced me’
Verb ‘displaced’ - Belle loved Scrooge, but she began to feel as if he did not love her as he loved money.
The ghost also shows Scrooge Belle a few years later, with her husband and children.
He wants Scrooge to know what he gave up for money. It is too much for Scrooge to take, and he puts out the ghost’s light.
For Scrooge, a reminder of how close he came to a real life is too painful. He is surrounded by money, not family.
‘fuel was heaped upon the fire’
GOCP takes Scrooge to see his old boss, Fezziwig Symbol of 'fire' - reflects the warmth and compassion that Fezziwig has Shows that upper class can be good people. Prevents reader developing a hatred for wealthy businessmen and gives them hope that Scrooge can change to be like Fezziwig. Fezziwig shows that Scrooge's life was not completely bad as Fezziwig acted as a paternal figure, Scrooge was involved in community celebrations and he had many opportunities.
