What is their purpose within the text? Why?
During the beginning, Jack serves as a symbol of anarchy, pushing back against Ralph and encouraging the boys to ignore Ralph’s orders. As the novel progresses, he transitions into a symbol of dictatorship and tyranny, leading the boys and controlling them through fear.
What do we learn of their relationships?
Ralph - Bitter rivals, Serves as the antithesis of each other in terms of leadership
Piggy - Fierce enemies, Hate each other, Dominating, Cut-throat, Intimidating, Polar opposites
Simon - Finds each other annoying/useless, dislike each other, lack of respect, expresses distain explicitly, opposite primal instincts
