JA Net+ Ch2 Flashcards
Route update packets
Chapter 2 Page 40
These are used to update neighboring router about the networks connected to all routers within the internet. Protocols route update packets are called routing protocols.
Network Addresses
Chapter 2 Page 41
These are protocol-specific network addresses. A router must maintain a routing table for individual routing protocols.
Hop count
Chapter 2 Page 41
The number of routers a packet passes through en route to a remote network.
Data Link Layer
Chapter 2 Page 43
Provides the physical transmission of the data and handles error notification, network topology, and flow control. This means the Data Link layer ensures that messages are delivered to the proper device on a LAN using mac addresses and translates messages from the Network layer into bits for the Physical layer to transmit.
Media Access control (MAC)
Chapter 2 Page 44
Defines how packets are placed on the media.
Logical Link Control (LLC)
Chapter 2 Page 44
Responsible for identifying Network layer protocols and then encapsulating them, an LLC header tells the Data Link Layer what to do with a packet once a frame is received.
802.3
Chapter 2 Page 45
Calls out anything having to do with Ethernet.
802.11
Chapter 2 Page 45
Calls out to anything wireless.
Physical Layer
Chapter 2 Page 45
Sends bits and receives bits. These bits only come in values of 1’s or 0’s.
State transitions
Chapter 2 Page 45
Changes in voltage from high to low and vice versa.
Encapsulation.
Chapter 2 Page 46
Data wrapped with protocol information at each layer of the OSI model. Each layer communicates with only it’s peer layer on the receiving device.
