JA Net+ Ch16 Flashcards
Frame Relay
Page 598
Allows for a packet-switched network to be provided to many different customers at the same time. Frame relay is based on the assumption that all customers wont need to transmit data constantly, or even at the same time.
What is Access Rate
Page 598
The max speed at which the Frame Relay interface can transmit.
Committed Information Rate (CIR)
Page 598
The max bandwidth of data guaranteed to be delivered. In reality, it’s the average amount that the service provider will allow you to transmit, based upon what you purchased.
Virtual Circuits
Page 598
Virtual circuits are what link together the thousands of devices connected to the provider’s “cloud”. Frame relay provides a virtual circuit between your two DTE devices.
Frame Relay PVCs are identified to DTE end devices by ____ ____ _______ __________.
Page 599
Data Link Connection Identifiers.
What is Point-to-Point Protocol? (PPP)
Page 599
A data Link layer protocol that can be used over either asynchronous serial (dialup) or synchronous serial (ISDN) media. PPP transports layer 3 packets across a Data Link layer Point-to-Point link, and it’s non-proprietary.
HDLC
Page 600
A method for encapsulating datagrams over serial links.
LCP
Page 600
Link Control Protocol. Offers different PPP encapsulation options including: Authentication, Compression, Error Detection, Multilink, PPP Call back.
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
Page 603
A data carrying mechanism that emulates some properties of a circuit switched network over a packet switched network.
Split Horizon
Page 607
Split horizon issues usually happen when using frame relay in an environment where you have multiple PVCs coming into single serial WAN interface.
