Londons population grew from 1 million to 5 million in the 1800s. Poverty, disease and crime all increased, leaving a lot of fear.
Celebrity criminals
Stories of terrifying urban criminals fascinated the Victorians. Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare were 2 examples.

the urban gothic focussed on real fears of isolation, crime and disease.

Popular short cheap gothic stories. J&H was one of these.
The alter ego
Many victorian novels (eg frankenstein) focussed on an alter-ego: a second version of the hero the is criminal and evil.
the fall of satan
The angle satan became too proud of his own beauty and power that he refused to serve god and was cast out of heaven. the victorians saw science as running this risk.
1859 charles darwins On The Origin Of Species
Darwins book, which introduced the Theory of Evolution. This terrified and angered many people as it threatened their entire view of the world.
Lombrosos theory of physiognomy
Italian Criminologist Cesare Lombroso proposed that the ‘born criminal’ could be recognised by their appearance, like asymmetrical face or long arms.
Sigmund Freuds Theory of the Mind
Frued proposed the mind has 3 parts: Id - our hidden unconscious desires Ego - Our conscious logical mind superego - the rules society imposes these 3 are in constant conflict.
