When do parents and adolescents with ASD start the transition process, and what is it called?
- ITP (Individualized transition Plan), which is part of the IEP, can start as early as age 14
- But, it is BY LAW REQUIRED by age 16
What does IDEA 2004 mandate the IEP team provide in terms of planning & coordinating?
IEP team is to provide well planned and coordinated set of activities for a student with a disability
How does the IEP team provide a result oriented process?
- provide instruction, community experience, development of employment, and adult living objectives (when kids are working when still in school they are more likely to work when they are out of school)
- Make it specific to student’s strengths, interests, & needs–based on functional vocational evaluation
- improve academic & functional achievement to facilitate life after school
What are we planning for the adolescent with autism as they transition to adulthood?
