IV Therapy Flashcards
IV Therapy
the parenteral administration of fluids and additives into a vein
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
IV therapy that is designed to meet nearly all the caloric and nutritional needs of a client
Crystalloid Solutions
consist of water and uniformly dissolved crystals such as salt or sugar
Colloid Solutions
consist of water and molecules of suspended substances such as blood cells and blood products
Isotonic Solution
contains the same concentration of dissolved substances as is normally found in plasma
Hypotonic Solution
contains fewer dissolved substances compared with plasma
Hypertonic Solution
more concentrated then body fluid
Whole Blood
most commonly administered colloid solution; administered when clients need fluid restoration as well as blood cells
Packed Cells
have most of the plasma removed; preferred for clients who need cellular replacements but do not need and may be harmed by administration of additional fluid
Blood Products
components extracted from blood
Coagulopathies
clotting disorders of various types
Blood Substitute
experimental fluid emulsion; carries and distributes oxygen to to cells, tissues, and organs
Plasma Expanders
nonblood, polysaccharide colloid solutions derived from beet sugar or corn starch
Primary Tubing
used to administer a large volume of IV solution over a long period or a small volume through a medication lock
Secondary Tubing
shorter than primary tubing, used to administer smaller volumes of solution through a port in the primary tubing in a relatively short time
