What is a Peripheral Intravenous Catheter (PIV)
-enters in veins in AC, lower arms, hands
-short term use
-decreased risk of complications
-Not recommended for all infusions
-Can have Multiple access sites
What is a midline catheter?
-enters peripheral vein and ends at axillary
-good for up to 6 weeks
-decreased risk of complications
-not recommended for all infusions
What is a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC)?
-enters at peripheral arm vein and ends at superior vena cava
-long term use
-multiple lumens
-patient can use in hospital or home
What is a central venous catheter (CVC)?
-enters subclavian, jugular or femoral vein
-long term use
-Emergency and critical care
-Multiple lumens at one site
-High risk of infection
What is a central venous port (port a cath)?
-placed under skin in chest and enters subclavian vein, ending in superior vena cava
long term use
common in chronic illness and chemotherapy
safer and more comfortable
