**IV INFO** Flashcards
Isotonic?
solution and cell have = concentrations
Hypotonic?
solution more concentrated than in cell ( crenation)
-MORE OSMOTIC PRESSURE
Hypertonic?
Solution less concentrated than in cell (lyse)
-LESS OSMOTIC PRESSURE
Isotonic Solution examples? (4)
0.9% Normal Saline
2/3 - 1/3 0.3% Normal Saline & 3.3 D5W Combined.
Ringers lactate
D5W ( Relatively Isotonic)
When does D5W become Hypotonic?
once it gets into veins due to metabolism of glucose.
Hypotonic Solution Examples?
0.3 %
Hypertonic solution Examples?
Mannitol
3.0% Normal Saline
D: Crystalloids Solutions
move quickly across cell membranes
- Remain in intravascular space for short time before diffusing cross capillary walls.
(thinner)
D: Colloid Solutions
dont move quickly and remain intravascular space for long periods
(thicker volume expanders)
1 liter of Lactate ringers solution Contains?
Sodium Potassium Calcium Chloride Ions Lactate
1 liter of normal saline contains?
Sodium
chloride
Artifical Colloids?
Dextran
Hetastarch ( Hespan)
Normal size for IV bag during Drug Admin?
100 - 250ml
Macro
10 drop set - large amount of fluid with each drop
Micro drip set?
60 drop set - smaller amount of fluid with each drop
60 drops = 1 ML
IV catheter sizes?
24G - yellow 22G - BLUE 20G - PINK 18G -GREEN 16G - GREY 14G- Orange
Needle size for canulation of peripheral vein?
1.5-2 inches.
Tunica Media info?
Middle of a vein – Muscular & Elastic.
Vasoconstrictor and Vasodilator stimulate vein to contract and relax.
IV attempts to what number?
3
what angle to hold catheter?
45 degree angle. when you get flash drop to 15
what size syringe to aspirate blood from IV line?
10ML
What do you flush in a dextrose line?
20ML
size of Needle for blood admin?
18G ( GREEN)
Cannulation of peripheral vein a needle should be what size?
1.5-2 inches ( 5 CM)
Flow Rate thru 14G, 5 cm catheter is?
125ml/Min
Some veins particularly difficult to cannulate?
obese patients pts in shock and cardiac arrest chronic mainline drug users elderly w/ rolling veins small children
Circulatory Overload?
Too much IV solution administered/ too rapidly for PT condition.
- Closely monitor IV flow rate (CHF)
What are IV complications?(5)
- Cannulation of Artery(puncture)
- Hematoma/infiltration
- Local infection
- Air Emobli
- Pyrogenic Reaction
What is Pyrogenic Reaction?
Foreign protein producing fever usually within 30 minutes
** SWITCH ARMS**
Fever of 100F - 106F
