IV Fluids - Week 2 Flashcards
Describe osmosis
Movement of water through semipermeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration until equilibrium is reached
What is molarity
Number of moles in 1L of fluid
What is osmolarity (osmotic concentration)
Number of particles present after being dissolved in 1L of fluid
What is tonicity
measure of osmotic pressure gradient between two solutions
If a compound dissociates in water how does it effect molarity vs osmolarity?
Osmolarity increases due to higher number of solutes
what is a hypertonic solution
Solution with a relative higher osmolarity/solute compared to normal body cells and blood
what is a hypotonic solution
Solution with a relative lower osmolarity/solute compared to normal body cells and blood
what is an isotonic solution
Solution with the same osmolarity/solute compared to normal body cells and blood
Drip rate equation
Volume to be infused (ml) x drip rate (20gtt) / time for infusion (minutes)
