IUCD Flashcards
Mal-position can have the ff. 4 types
D-E-P-E
1. Displacement
2. Embedment
3. Perforation
4. Expulsion
Rotation or inferior position in lower uterine segment or Cx
Displacement
Penetration of myometrium without extension through serosa
Embedment
Penetration through both myometrium and serosa
Perforation
Passage either partially or completely through external cervical os
Expulsion
Common types of IUCD
- Copper T-shaped (non-hormonal metallic)
- Mirena (hormonal) aka LNG-IUS
- Double “S”-shaped Lippes loop
- Chinese stainless steel rings
Other term of Mirena
Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS)
Consists of a plastic sleeve that contains the progestin and surrounds a central stem.
LNG-IUS
This configuration causes acoustic shadowing and has a characteristic “laminated” sonographic appearance with parallel lines
LNG-IUS
This IUD was commonly used in the 1960s to 1980s
Double “S”-shaped Lippes loop
Four or five echogenic dots in upper EC on Sag view
Double “S”-shaped Lippes loop
A curvy spiral echogenicity is seen on Cor view
Double “S”-shaped Lippes loop
The formation of calcium carbonate deposits on or near the IUD, is a well-described phenomenon that can be demonstrated as uneven echoes surrounding the normal IUD echoes
Incrustation
Rare phenomenon due to the development of a mature bone in the endometrium
Endometrial osseous metaplasia
