Q

What is happening to ITT pathways?

A

Several significant changes are happening to initial teacher training (ITT) pathways in the UK in 2025. Here’s a summary of the key developments:

  1. New ITT and Early Career Framework (ITTECF)
    * From September 2025, a new ITTECF will combine and replace the existing Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework and the Early Career Framework.
    * This framework sets out what trainee and early career teachers should know and be able to do at the start of their careers.
    * It will apply to accredited ITT providers and schools that train early career teachers.
    * The framework has been developed based on a review of the existing frameworks.
  2. Application Timelines for 2025/26
    * Applications for postgraduate teacher training courses starting in September 2025 open on 8 October 2024 and close on 16 September 2025.
    * Training providers have until 24 September 2025 to make a decision on applications.
    * Deadlines for non-UK citizens may be earlier, so it’s important to check with training providers.
  3. Funding and Bursaries
    * Tuition fees for teacher training programmes starting in the 2025/26 academic year will be £9,535 for full-time courses and £7,145 for part-time courses.
    * Training bursaries are available for certain subjects and degree classifications.
    * Early years ITT funding guidance for 2025 to 2026 has also been published.
  4. National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) Programmes
    * The NIoT offers school-centred ITT programmes with a focus on immersive learning and practical application.
    * Their programmes lead to QTS and PGCE qualifications.
    * They also offer Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships.
    Overall
The changes to ITT pathways in 2025 reflect an ongoing effort to strengthen teacher training and support the professional development of early career teachers in the UK. The new ITTECF aims to provide a more coherent and comprehensive framework for teacher training, while funding and bursary arrangements are designed to attract and support high-quality candidates.
