Italy - Trentino-Alto Adige Flashcards
What is the average vineyard holding in Trentino? What does this mean for production?
Small, 1.2ha. Because of this, co-operatives and to a lesser extend merchants are very significant for production.
How much of production do co-operatives and estates account for in Trentino?
More than 80%, with Cavit producing 60% alone.
Estates about 10%.
What is the controversy around Trentino DOC?
While it’s a very high proportion of production, it is questionable if there’s uniformly high quality as its yield allowances are high. This has led to some high quality producers to not use Trentino DOC, eg, Foradori.
What is the alternative to Trentino DOC?
Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT.
What market is key from Trentino DOC?
The hospitality sector in Italy, especially trentodoc, Müller-Thurgau and Teroldego Rotaliano.
What is the average vineyard holding in Alto-Adige? What does this mean for production?
Very small, typically 1ha. This makes co-operatives very important and they account for 70% of production, including some high quality wines.
Even the better known estates have a limited number of hectares, meaning they need to make wines at a mid to premium price. Eg, Alois Lageder has 50ha (plus twice as much contract fruit) and Elena Walch has 60.
Who are key co-operatives, and how do they affect quality of the wines?
Cantina Kaltern (the largest winery in the province) and Cantina di Tramin. The top co-operatives work hard to encourage quality and pay high prices to growers to incentivise quality.
What is the biggest market for Alto-Adige?
Domestic at 75%, with a focus on whites and aromatic varieties.
Just under half of this are sales within the province where tourism is very important.
The most important domestic sector is hospitality, then SWR, with only a small proportion in supermarkets.
Who are key export markets for Alto-Adige?
Germany then the USA.
The province is currently actively promoting its wines in 9 overseas markets.
Schiava is sold locally and exported to German-speaking countries.
Who promotes Alto-Adige wines? What’s one key labelling factor?
The Consortium Alto Adige Wines.
All wines are branded with the Südtirol logo on the capsule.
