Italy - Friuli Flashcards
What are the two main growers organisations for high quality wines?
• Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio
• Consorzio Tutela Vini Friuli Colli Orientali e Ramandolo, which oversees four DOC(G)s:
- Colli Orientali del Friuli
- Ramandolo
- Picolit
- Rosazzo
Where do Friulian wines tend to prove popular?
The Italian restaurant and specialist retail market. Especially successful in national wine competitions, such as the Gambero Rosso.
What is the state of exports?
Grew by 55% value from 2013-18, partly but not exclusively due to the growth of Pinot Grigio and Prosecco.
What style of wine is increased focus being put on promoting? Why is the region looking to change?
White wines are the speciality, but increased focus is being placed on promoting red wines, especially the native varieties such as Refosco.
Partly because other northern Italian regions, especially Trentino-Alto Adige, have entered the market for clean, modern, well made white wines, often at a lower price.
Competition at the lower end has also come from inexpensive P Grigio grown across Italy and in Eastern Europe where costs can be lower.
