rebirth of ressurgance links to the idea of reunifying italy
when was italy fully unified?
1871 when the papal states
what is campanilismo?
feeling of pride belonging to their place of birth stronger than national identity
socially why was italy not fully unified?
were not unified through language many spoke regional dialect [ 99%], unable to understand people from other areas.
the official language ‘italian’ was a dialect from florence but few spoke it apart from the upper class including the king . as his subjects did not understand him there was dissconnection between the people and the monarchy
who were the italians that made up parliament?
preominatly northern proffessionals - middle class who represented their own interests of their own class at the expense of the wider population
what was the upper and lower chamber?
- upper chamber was made up of senates chosen by the king
- lower chamber was represnted through deputies
why was the political system corrupt?
bribery would take place and deputies would be ‘bought’ corruption on the inside
what was the political hirearchy ?
the king was head of state and the prime minster was the head of government and deputies within parties
were there parties in parliament ?
there were little to no parties but some were loosly formed
what percentage of the population had the vote?
less than 25% of men
