Sardinia General Info

A

South of Corsica, the island of Sardinia is a very hot and dry Mediterranean climate here. As such The island’s wines easily reach high alcohol levels.

Sardinia owes a great amount of its wine traditions and history to the Spanish. The Spanish Kingdom of Aragon ruled Sardinia until the early 1700s, for a period of nearly 400 years.

The main grape varieties planted here were likely introduced to the island during a period of general Spanish cultural assimilation.

Dominant red varietals:

  • Cannonau (Garnacha/Grenache)
  • Carignano (Cariñena/Carignan/Bovale Grande)

And the island’s dominant white grape, Vermentino, is likely of Spanish origin.
