Barolo DOCG

Est. 1980

  • Communes:
    Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, Diano d’Alba, Cherasco and Roddi.
  • Serralunga d’Alba is well structured, long lived and the most tannic of the five, while Castiglione-Falleto is renowned for its full-bodied, rich nature and good balance and aromas. Monforte d’Alba offers rich, concentrated characteristics and a serious intensity.
  • Famous “Cru” Vineyards:
    Cannubi, Sarmazza, Brunate, Cerequio, Rocche, Monprivato, Villero, Lazzarito, Vigna Rionda, Bussia, Ginestra and Santo Stefano di Perno.
  • Natural features:
    The Tanaro River flows through Piedmont, dividing the Roero from the Langhe and providing a moderating influence

Minimum Alcohol:
* Barolo: 13% (12.5% potential at harvest) - includes Normale, Riserva, and “menzioni geografiche aggiuntive”
* Barolo with “menzioni geografiche aggiuntive” and “Vigna” at harvest: 13%

Aging Requirements:
Barolo: 38 months from November 1 of the harvest year, including 18 months in wood.
Barolo Riserva: 62 months from November 1 of the harvest year, including 18 months in wood.

Soil:
* Barolo / La Morra: High concentration of limestone-rich Tortonian marl.
* Castiglione-Falleto, Serralunga d’Alba and Monforte:
Sandstone and limestone
