Italy - Friuli Flashcards
What are the two most important DOCs? What are similarities and why was the division drawn out?
For both domestic and export markets, Collio and Collio Orientali del Friuli (COF).
They share similar characteristics and are mainly divided by political history. COF became part of Italy in the 19th century, while Collio was brought in in 1914.
Where is winemaking similar to Collio?
The geology and wine culture continues into Slovenia across the border.
Which DOC is in the process of becoming a DOCG?
Collio
What are the max yields of Collio DOC?
77
What styles of wine are produced from Collio and COF DOCs?
The principal wines are single variety whites: Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay.
DOC wines can have a variety name, eg Collio Orientali del Friuli Sauvignon Blanc or Collio Friulano. This is applicable for 18 varieties, reflecting the range of varieties grown.
Why are sub zones being drawn out in Collio and COF?
To identify the best zones for each of the 18 varieties.
What are the two key DOCs from the plains near the Adriatic Sea?
5 in total, the two key ones are Grave del Friuli DOC (most volume wines) and Friuli Isonzo DOC (best quality from sites on the right bank of the river Isonzo neighbouring Collio).
What are the two denominations for sweet wines?
They are two of the four DOCGs in Friuli.
Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit DOCG is a historic wine that once was a competitor for Tokaj. Volumes have always been small as the variety Picolit has bunches each with only 10-15 berries due to problems with berry set. Wine is made from air dried grapes.
Ramondolo DOCG is made from air dried grapes of the Verduzzo variety.
Which DOC was introduced in 2016?
Friuli DOC, adding to the existing DOC(G)s, that allows growers to produce wine to a DOC standard across all authorised areas of Friuli.
Permitted yields are high, 98hL/ha for the most popular whites. It remains to be seen if consumers and those in the supply chain see this as a positive development.
