Issues in the diagnosis of Schizophrenia Flashcards
What is inter rater reliability?
The type of reliability occurs when clinicians make identical, independent diagnosis of the same patient.
Beck et al (1961)
When a group of 153 patients with schizophrenia were each assessed by two different psychiatrists the diagnosis agreement rate was only 54%.
What factors could influence low inter rater reliability in schizophrenia?
- symptoms are subjective
- not allowed to discuss criteria beforehand
- cultural bias
- different experience levels
- different diagnostic manuals
Copeland (1970)
134 US psychiatrists and 194 british psychiatrists were given a description of a patient. 69% of US psychiatrists diagnosed schizophrenia and only 2% of british psychiatrists
What is test retest reliability in regards to schizophrenia?
When clinicians make the same schizophrenic diagnosis of the patient on separate occasions from the same information
What is comorbidity?
When more than one disorder or disease exists alongside a primary diagnosis. E.g. schizophrenia and a personality disorder
What are overlapping symptoms?
None of the symptoms of schizophrenia are exclusive to the disorder (pathognomic).
What disorders have overlapping symptoms with schizophrenia?
Bipolar disorder, OCD and autism etc.
Read et al. 2011
Roughly 13% of the population hear voices but only 1% are diagnosed with schizophrenia
