Issues and debates Flashcards
What is the nature-nurture debate?
A debate concerned with the extent to which aspects of behaviour are a product of inherited or acquired characteristics.
What do nativists (nature) believe in?
Argue hat human characteristics are innate and the results of heredity.
What do empiricists (nurture) believe in?
Argue that the mind is a ‘blank slate’ at birth, and our behaviour is the results of learning and experience from the environment.
What do interactionists argue?
That nature and nurture are linked, so it does not make sense to separate the two. Researchers should therefore study how they interact and influence each other
What is the diathesis-stress model?
It is caused by a genetic vulnerability which is only expressed when coupled with an environmental trigger. e.g. Schizophrenia
What is epigenetics?
A change in our genetic activity without changing the gene themselves and is caused by interaction with the gov.
