Traders for companies like Hudson’s Bay Company used rum to secure trading rights. They supplied locals with copious quantities of alcohol, which was traded for pelts. Once locals became addicted, traders would water down alcohol in order to gain as many pelts as possible. For example, ‘English Brandy’ was simply cheap gin coloured with iodine, demonstrating the lasting impact Scots had was alcohol dependency.
