1704. the worcester, an english trading vessel, was seized in the firth of forth by officials of the darien company, who were still smarting at the collapse of the scheme. allegations by two of the worcester’s crew led the scottish authorities to convene an admiralty court in edinburgh to try the captain, thomas green, and seventeen others for an act of piracy committed on the coast of malabar. the charges were nonsensical but the sailors were found guilty and
were hanged on leith sands on 11 april 1705 in front of a huge crowd of 80,000 people.

it was an economic disaster. the company had lost over £230,000 made up of the life savings of many of the scottish people. the darien failure had a serious economic impact because of the enormous national investment that had gone into it.

Passed by the english parliament, they stated that goods and produce being brought into england must be carried either in english ships, or in ships from the country that was trading with england. scottish merchants could only sell scottish produce to england.

1704. this attempted to strengthen scottish trade at the expense of that of england by allowing the export and prohibited the import of wool. this was therefore. seen as an attack against english trade, where queen anne only gave her assent as she needed scottish parliament to grant money to help fund the war.
