Isotopes And Ions Flashcards
What is an isotope?
An isotope is an atom of the same elements with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons and have different masses
What are ions?
Ions are charged atoms. They are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons. The electrons change so that means there is a positively and negatively charged object. The electrons change but the protons and neutrons stay the same.
What is the bigger number in an element?
The atomic mass (mass number)
What is the smaller number of an element?
The atomic number
What subatomic particles add up to the atomic mass?
Protons and neutrons
What does the atomic number hold (in subatomic particles)?
Protons and electrons (NOT ADDED TOGETHER, BUT THAT NUMBER IS THE AMOUNT FOR EACH SUBATOMIC PARTICLE)
How would you find the number of neutrons?
The atomic mass minus the atomic number
If an atom loses an electron, what would the charge be?
Positive charge (ions)
If an atom gains an electron, what would the charge be?
Negative charge (ions)
