Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding is the strong electrostatic attraction between positively charged ions. This happens between metals and non-metals!
What is a simple covalent structure?
It has weak intermolecular forces between the molecules but are held by covalent bonds between the atoms which are really strong. They have a low melting point so can be broken down easily.
Giant covalent structure
They have strong covalent bonds between atoms, no intermolecular forces between them (could be a lattice). They have a high melting point so is hard to break down
What are polymers
Polymers are large molecules that are made up of repeating units called monomers. They are held by covalent bonds.
What are the forces between polymers?
Polymers aren’t linked, so they only can interact by intermolecular forces and therefore can be easliyu broken when heated.
Thermosoftening
Plastics which will soften when heated and can be reshaped.
thermosetting
Plastics that do not soften on heating. They are used when resistance to heat is important.
Metallic bonding
the strong electrostatic attraction between the sea of delocalised electrons and positively charged metal ions
