Isotopes Flashcards
How do you calculate Relative Atomic Mass?
(Relative Mass X Abundance)+other masses X Abundance)/100
What is an isotope?
An element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
What is the relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom compared to 1/12th of carbon-12
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
How does Mass spectrometry work?
Sample is first vaporised and turn into a gas.
Electrons bombard the gas and knock off electrons making the gas have a +1 ion.
Ions are only allowed to accelerate in the next stage.
Magnetic field deflects lightest ions most. Heavier ions are slightly less deflected.
The detector detects the ions at varied areas and can then create a chart.
What is an ion?
An electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions.
