Isotopes Flashcards
Describe isotopes as different atoms of the same element containing the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nucleus
They share almost the same chemical properties, but differ in mass and therefore in physical properties
How to Calculate the numbers of protons, in atoms given the atomic number and mass number
The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom is equal to the atomic number (Z).
How to Calculate the numbers of neutrons, in atoms given the atomic number and mass number
number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number.
How to Calculate the numbers of electrons, in atoms given the atomic number and mass number
number of electrons = atomic number.
Explain how the existence of isotopes results in relative atomic masses of some elements not being whole numbers
It takes account of the abundance. of each of the isotopes of the element.
