Isomers Flashcards
Isomer
same molecular formula; different structures of a molecule
Difference between isomer and resonance structure
An isomers have a different arrangement of both electrons AND atoms, while resonance structures have a different arrangement of electrons only
What does IHD stand for?
Index of Hydrogen Deficiency
What is the purpose of IHD?
Tells us the number of rings and/or pi bonds in a structure
Formula for IHD
(2n+2)-total # of hydrogens/2
n=number of carbons
Saturated molecules
have maximum number of hydrogens
Unsaturated molecules
make pi bond/ring and lose 2 hydrogens
Calculating IHD when structure is given
Count the number of rings and pi bonds
Pi bonds
double bond= 1 pi bond, 1 sigma bond
triple bond= 1 sigma bond, 2 pi bonds
Constitutional isomers
Have the same molecular formula but different connectivity
Conformational isomers (stereoisomers)
Have the same molecular formula AND same connectivity, but different orientation in space
Types of stereoisomer (conformational isomers)
Geometric isomers (cis/trans)
Cis/trans isomers
differ in geometry of groups on a double bond
Cis stereoisomers
have similar groups on the same side
Trans isomers
have similar groups on opposite sides
