Isomerism and Aromaticity Flashcards
What are optical isomers?
A mirror image of a compound with a chiral center.
What is a chiral center?
A carbon with four different functional groups attached to it.
What is an enantiomer?
A mirror image of a compound with a chiral center.
Whats a racemic mixture?
A mixture containing equal quantities of each enantiomer of an optically active compound.
Explain the meaning of the term ‘stereoisomerism’
The property of having stereoisomers, of which the molecules with the same molecular formula and with their atoms arranged in the same way , but with a different orientation of the bonds in space.
Explain why electrophiles are attracted to benzene.
Because the benzene ring is a region of high electron density.
What is used as a catalyst in the nitration of benzene?
Sulfuric acid
What is the difference between an aromatic and an aliphatic compound?
An aromatic compound contains a benzene ring, where as an aliphatic one does not.
