Isomerism Flashcards
What is isomerism
Isomers are molecules with the same molecular formula but different arrangement of the atoms in space
what are the 2 types plus subtypes of isomerism
1.) constitutional isomerism
- different bonding of atoms
- chain, functional group, positional
2.) stereoisomerism
- enantiomerism, cis-trans
What is chain isomerism and what does it mean for the properties
Different structure of the carbon chain, similar chemical but different physical properties
What is positional isomerism and what does it mean for the properties
Same functional group at different carbons of the carbon chain, similar chemical but different physical properties
What is needed for cis trans isomerism
Restricted rotation about a C-C bond, 2 different groups bonded to each C
