Isomerism Flashcards
Constitutional isomerism
Molecules are constitutional isomers of each other when they have the same molecular formula but different structural formula
Comparison of chain/positional isomers
They have the same chemical properties but different physical properties such as boiling points
Comparison of functional group isomers
Different physical and chemical properties.
Functional group determines the reactions the compound undergo
Definition of cis-trans isomerism
A compound is said to exhibit cis-trans isomerism if it exhibits the following:
• a restricted rotation about a carbon-carbon bond, e.g. C=C bond
• has two different groups / atoms attached to each C atom of the C=C double bond
Comparison of Cis-trans isomers
They have the same molecular formula and structural formula, but differ in the spatial arrangement of atoms.
Chemical and Physical Properties of Cis-Trans Isomers
Cis and trans isomers have the same chemical properties but different physical properties due to polarity difference.
