island Flashcards
What is the equilibrium theory of island biogeography?
The theory is to predict the species diversity on an island is positively related to the size of the island, but negatively relate by the island’s dthe distance of the island to the main.
How does it relate to immigration and
extinction and species richness?
The model is used to predict at some point the rates of immigration and extinction will reach an equilibrium point that determines the island’s average number of different species (the species diversity).
What is the turnover?
Species turnover is the dynamic equilibrium between immigration and local extinction.
As the number of species grows
Immigration rate decreases. Fewer, new species on the mainland and saturation, niches filled. Extinction rate increases.
