Ihraam (“E-rum”)
Making the intention (ni-ya) to enter a spiritual status, commiting to religious purity with obedience to restrictions. Required to successfully peform the rites of Hajj. (Men and women where simple white)
Hajj and why?
Annual pilgrimage to Mecca to perform related rites in obediance to the Qu’ran. This is required at least once in life if able. Fifth pillar of faith.
It allows pilgrims to be forgiven and become closer to Allah, it is a pillar
Tawaf and why?
Circumambulating around the Ka’ba in 7 circles counter clockwise.
Angels are performing tawaf above them, obedience and submission. Anticlockwise because they are entering the movement of the universe. 7 times because its what prophet Muhummad did
Sa’i and why?
Seven laps between two locations known as Safa and Marwa (450m apart).
Imitating Hagar running between the mountains.
Arafat/Wuquf
Most important. Mount of mercy (close to Mecca) where all pilgrims gather on the 9th of Zoul Hijjah in order to pray, reflect, and prepare for judgement day.
Where muhummad performed kast sermon, forgiveness from Allah, prep for day of judgement, reflection, where Adam met Eve after banishing.
Muzdalifa
A small valley close to Arafat. When pilgrims finish from Arafat, they stop in Muzdalifa to stay overnight before heading to Mina. Must stand for a moment
Mina
A camp area 8km away from Mecca. Pilgrims stay in Mina for three nights in order to perform stoning and other rites of Hajj.
Jamarat
Jamarah: singular
indicates the area where stoning takes place, the tall pillars representing the satan in ehich pikgrims stone 7 times each while chanting “Allahu Akbah”
Stoning
Pilgrims stone each jamarah as a symbolic act of challenging evil desires and Satan while chanting allahu akbah
Eid
The festival or feast which marks the end of Hajj. First day involves sacrificing an animal, cutting their hair, and the following days involve stoning all three jamrah again

Pilgrims believe that by performing hajj
They will become trusting like Hagar, spiritually stringer like Abraham, free from sin like ‘a new born baby’, restored in rekationship with Allah like adam and eve, and also fulfill the pillar of faith
