Who is Allah?
The “supreme God”; humans have the free will to submit to God’s will, a gracious surrendering to the all compassionate all merciful Allah
Who is Muhammad?
The messenger of God who restored the religion; born in Mecca and was visited by Angel Gabriel who commanded him to be a messenger of God; at the time many people practiced idolatry and worshipped the Ka’bah; Muhammad asked people to believe in one God
What is the Qur’an?
The holy book of Islam, seen as God’s word and not Muhammad’s word even though Muhammad conveyed it

The second source of law for Muslims
What are the 5 pillars of the Islamic faith?
The fundamental constituents of Muslim life
- Shahadah - the profession of faith
- Salat - prayer five times daily
- Zakat - mandatory almsgiving
- Sawm - fasting during the month of Ramadan
- Hajj - the pilgrimage to Mecca which every Muslim should make at least once in their life
What is the Day of Judgement?
The day a persons soul is either sent to Paradise for eternal grace and happiness or Hell for eternal suffering and damnation
What is polygamy?
The practice of being married to more than one person at once. Men in Muslim culture are allowed to have up to four wives

Who are the four caliphs?
Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali
What is the Muslim calendar year based on?
The year that Muhammad emigrated to Yathrib

Perform wudu; ritually clean their body in order to be ready for prayer
Who are Sunni Muslims?
Make up nearly 85% of Muslims; believe Muhammad did not choose a successor and building consensus within the community is the best way to arrive at a just and equitable society; believe 4 caliphs are the true successors but Mahdi has not been born yet; when Mahdi does come he’ll bring justice and righteousness to the world
Who are Shi’ah Muslims?
The party of Ali; believe Ali was Muhammad’s chosen successor; believe Imams (Ali and 12 descendants) are the rightful successors of Muhammad; believe the 12th Imam, Mahdi, disappeared and will return to bring justice and righteousness to the world
What is Sufi?
A mystical philosophy of Islam
What is jihad?
Striving to obey the commands of God
What is the Ka’bah?
A cube-shaped structure that Abraham built; the center of idolatry for a long time
What is whispered into the ear of a baby at birth?
“Adhan”, means Allah is great; the call for prayer
How is a Muslim child named?
Aqiqah, a naming ceremony, is done within the first seven days of life; the hair of the baby is shaved and a goat or sheep is sacrificed - the weight of hair is donated in silver to the poor and one third of the meat is also donated
What is the family hierarchy?
The father is the head of the household, followed by the mother; the oldest child has the responsibility to protect the young one while they have the responsibility to respect the eldest
What are the rules of Muslim marriage?
- must be announced publicly
- 2 adult males and the bride’s marriage guardian must be present
- a marriage contract must be made and signed, stating how much money the bride receives as a gift, where they will live and any other property related issues
What is ISIS? How did it form?
ISIS (Islamic State in Syria) is an Islamic terrorist group. The goal of ISIS is to restore the caliphate created by the original four caliphs. They kill those who oppose them and use videos of murder and torture to install fear into viewers and possibly gain recruitments.
What’s happening to ISIS and what will happen when it’s finished?
ISIS is losing, completely falling apart. They’ve lost 60% of their land. If ISIS disbands foreign fighters will try to come home and now be trained to terrorize. ISIS is no longer a place, it is now an idea and you can’t kill an idea. Ideology of ISIS will live on and others could fall for their propaganda and their radical ideas and terrorize in their name even if the group itself is gone.
How are women viewed in the eyes of the religion?
According to God and the Qur’an, women are seen as equals to men. Both are expected to obey God and live modest and virtuous lives
Wearing the hijab is also not required but strongly recommended.
