What is a martyr?
Someone who has suffered or died for his or her religion or beliefs
What is a schism?
A division of the Church into separate groups because of strong differences of opinion
What are Apostles?
Followers of Jesus during his public ministry as well as present day
What are disciples?
The 12 individuals who were Jesus’ closest followers
What are Epistles?
Letters written by Christ’s apostles to instruct Churches and individuals about the faith
What is the Trinity?
The father, son and Holy Spirit all encompass one God
What is the original sin?
The sin of disobedience committed by Adam and Eve
What is salvation?
Christians believe that those who truly follow Jesus and his way of living are saved and will be fully united with Jesus after they die

What is the significance of Jerusalem?
- Where Jesus preached and healed the sick
- in Jerusalem, he was tried and convicted; outside he was crucified, died, buried, resurrected, and ascended into Heaven
What is advent? (4)
- begins 4 Sunday’s before Christmas to prepare our hearts for Jesus
- a season of preparing for the advent or “coming” of Jesus
- symbolizes that the coming of Jesus is a light in the darkness
- advent season ends on Christmas Day
What is Christmas? (3)
- the 2nd holiest day in the Christian year
- most celebrate December 25th; some orthodox churches celebrate January 7th after the epiphany
- actual date of birth of Jesus is unknown
What is the Epiphany?
12 days after Christmas is the feast of the Epiphany which celebrates the baptism of Jesus; means “manifestation” or “revelation”
What is Easter? (4)
- one of the most important times in the Christian year
- Christians celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus
- before Easter is the 40 day period called Lent
- Lent comes from the old English word meaning “springtime”
What is shrove Tuesday?
- the day before Lent
* we traditionally eat pancakes and eat heartily to get rid of any fat in the house
What is Lent? (3)
- believers give up something or take on something during Lent
- today, many Christians try to show their sympathy for Jesus’ suffering by giving up their favorite foods (ex. meat, chocolate, alcohol)
- begins with Ash Wednesday (many Christians receive ashes as a way to remind themselves that their bodies are transitory)
What is Holy Week?
- the week before Easter is called Holy Week, begins with Palm Sunday
- story of Jesus’ return from the wilderness is told through plays and street processions
What is Palm Sunday?
• the day that Jesus was welcomed to the city of Jerusalem with Palm branches, and the crowds welcomed him as a savior
What is Maundy Thursday? (3)
- humility is expressed in the celebration
- marks the day of the Last Supper, at which Jesus washed the feet of his disciples the day before he was killed
- even the pope washes the feet of ordinary worshippers today
What is Good Friday?
- honors day Jesus was crucified and is a somber day for remembrance
- most people attend services and spend time praying and reflecting
What is Easter Sunday? (4)
- time of celebration; festivities can start on the evening before with church services at sunrise marking the beginning of the day Jesus resurrected from the dead
- Easter eggs painted and given as gifts or hidden as part of a children’s scavenger hunt
- chocolate egg also popular
- eggs symbolize the empty tomb
What is ascension day?
• follows 40 days after Easter and marks the day that God took Jesus up into heaven
