Islam
the new religion “founded” by Mohammad in 622 AD, built upon the traditions of Judaism and Christianity. The word itself means “surrender” but is also related to the Arabic word for “peace”
Koran
written by Mohammad, standing miracle, Angel Gabriel delivered a message to Mohammad. God in a book. Builds on the Jewish torah, and the christian Bible with the Old Testament and the New Testamentt.
Medina
Originally Yathirib. Became Mohammad’s home base after the hegira; as ruler he combined political and religious beliefs and commitments.
Hegira/ Hijra
the flight from Mecca to Medina
Jinn
The polytheistic gods that preceded Islam. Islam potentially threatens the economy because people would go on pilgrimages to see the Jinn
Mohammad
the last prophet, the seal of the prophet (people who receive and share the word of God), founder of Islam. creator of the Koran, was a Camel driver who became a politician, humility was a big part of him
Khadija
15 years older, Mohammad’s employer and future wife. His first convert to Islam.
Allah
The god of Islam. “There is no god but Allah” Same god as Judaism and Christianity.
Gabriel
Angel/ Messenger of God. Told Mohammad to spread the word of God to everyone around him.
Jihad
Translates to “effort, exertion, or struggle.” It has come to mean Holy War, but refers to the struggle against those who do not believe in Allah.

the city containing the Kaaba which was dedicated to Allah by Mohammed
Mount Hira
The mountain cave outside Mecca where Mohammad began to receive the Qur’an and his first revelations from God through the angel Gabriel.

On the two nights of power, the passages of the Koran came from Allah to Mohammad.
