What are the five pillars of Islam?
Hajj, Zakat, Sawm, Salah, Shahadah
What is Shahadah?
It is the statement of faith for what Muslims believe e.g. Allah as one God and Muhammad was his messenger.
What is Salah?
It is prayer which is done five times a day facing Mecca.
What Zakat?
Giving 2.5% of earnings to charity.
What is Hajj?
It is the pilgrimage to Mecca.
What is Sawm?
fasting in Ramadan (the Islamic month)
Where is Shahadah used?
It is whispered into the ear of a new born baby and recited five times a day during prayer. Muhammad encouraged Muslims to make it their last words.
What is Wudu?
It is the washing process designed to purify the mind and body for prayer as Muhammad said that the key to Salah is cleanliness.
What should Muslims do during Sawm?
Give up food and drink from dawn till dusk, consider behaviour towards others and spend time in the mosque praying and read the whole of the Quran. During these hours they should refrain from sexual relations.
Who does not have to fast during Ramadan?
They young (under 12), the ill, the pregnant and travellers but days can be made up later.
Why do Muslims do Zakat?
Muslims are expected to be kind, compassionate and help others as wealth is seen as a loan from Allah, Muslims should donate to charity when the need arises
Why is Salah important?
It is described as duty that must be performed at the given time in the Quran. They believe a person is closest to God when praying and focuses their mind on Allah.
What is Ihram? (Hajj)
The pilgrims dressing white robes to illustrate that all Muslims are equal, white shows purity.
What is Tawaf? (Hajj)
Circulating the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise. The Kaaba is covered with a black cloth.
what is the Zamzam well? (Hajj)
A well which people drink from and some dip their garments in it to be used at their burial.
