What is Murrharram?
The first month of the Islamic calendar.
What is Ashura? (Sunni)
The 10th day of Murrharram. A joyful day.
What is Ashura? (Shia)
The 10th day of Murrharram. A day for sorrow, remembering the death of Hussein.
What is Mawlid-Al-Nabi?
The birthday of the prophet. (Muhammad)
What is Miradj?
Mouhammad’s nightly journey to heaven. Muhammad flew to Jerusalem on a horselike creature called a buraq. From there he ascended to heaven and met god.
What is Lailet Al-Berat?
This is the night where all sins are forgiven and destiny is determined. This is a holiday of intense prayer. In addition, it is on this night Muhammad and his followers marched into Mecca in 630.
What is Ramadan?
The month of fasting. The ninth month of the Muslim calender. Ramadan is a month of remembrance. This is the month when Muhammad received the revelations of god.
What is Eid al-Fitr?
(Breaking the fast celebration) When Ramadan is over it’s time to celebrate. It’s a day of being grateful and thanking god for the spiritual strength to follow through the month of fasting. An important part is to give to charity.
What is Hadj?
(The pilgrimage) The Islamic term for the pilgrimage to Mecca. The Hadj is made a special month in of the year.
