Q

why are there two different Islamic beliefs (Sunni and Shia Muslims)

A

when Muhammed died the majority of Muslims believed that only the Quran and the Sunnah had the authority to guide the beliefs of Muslims. Sunni Muslims elected Caliph as their leader to act on behalf of God. Another group believed that Muhammed named his cousin as his successor. These Muslims believe that each true leader ( called the imam) leader is a descent of Muhammed and chosen by God. Shia have their own interpretation of Islamic laws
