Islam and Forgiveness Flashcards
What are five points?
The teachings of the Qur'an The example of the Prophet Muhammad The example of Allah Teachings about the Day of Judgement Muslims are part of the Ummah, so good relationships and reconciliation are required
The teachings of the Qur’an
“But he that forgives and seeks reconciliation shall be rewarded by God.” (Qur’an 42)
The Qur’an teaches Muslims the importance of forgiveness because Allah will forgive them their sins
Muslims want to be rewarded by Allah and also forgiven by him for their sins so will practice forgiveness
The example of the Prophet Muhammad
The life of the Prophet Muhammad taught Muslims how forgiveness was paramount at a time of conflict
After he captured the city of Mecca, Muhammad told its leaders, “You are all free.”
Muslims are taught that forgiveness can form friends and allies
Muslims should follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad
The example of Allah
Al-Ghafur is another of the 99 names of Allah and means the all-forgiving
The Quar’an 2 states that “God is forgiving and merciful.”
Muslims worship the 99 names of Allah and would follow his example
Teachings about the Day of Judgement
Muslims believe that, after they die, Allah will judge them on the way they have lived their life on earth
Because Allah is merciful, a person who has repented their sins will be forgiven
Because no-one knows when they will die, asking for forgiveness is a normal and important part of a Muslims life. Repenting your sins means you will go to heaven, which is a strong incentive for Muslims to forgive
Muslims are part of the Ummah, so good relationships and reconciliation are required
“Allah will not show mercy to one who does not show mercy to others.” (Hadith)
Muslims want Allah to show them mercy and so they should do the same by forgiving
What are the opposing points?
“Don’t forgive the wilfully unjust. If we tolerate wrong by allowing it to run rampant when we can prevent it, we fail in our duty to Allah.” (Hadith)
Occasionally, forgiveness is not the right response because Muslims have a duty to Allah to protect the religion and its principles
