Ali - as he was his closest blood relation and they believed that Muhammad ( pbuh ) selected him to be the new caliph before his death
Give 2 differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims ( aside from who they believed should have been successor ):
How they pray: Sunni Muslims pray 5 times a day while Shias pray 3 times a day as they usually combine their midday and afternoon prayers and believe they are allowed more freedom. Shias also use natural elements while praying such as placing their head on a rock or clay
Views on angels: Sunni Muslims believe that angels always obey God’s commandments because they have no free will. However, Shia Muslims believe that angels do have free will and, whilst they are obedient to God’s commandments, they are able to stray and disobey Him. Shia Muslims believe that they are not disobedient, though, because they have no desire to sin.

Give a reason that each of the 5 pillars may be considered the most significant:
Shahadah - Everyone must say that they bear witness to only one god before converting to Islam, shows dedication to the faith as a whole, is stated throughout prayers, saying it daily reminds individuals of their spiritual journey
Salat - praying that often shows commitment to Allah, allows Muslims to seek guidance and forgiveness, a prophet said that it is taken into account on the day of judgement
Zakat - helps muslims purify their wealth and give back to communities, helps wider issues outside the religion, Muhammad ( pbuh ) said that camels would tread whoever had not paid their zakat with their feet, makes Muslims more similar to Allah who is omnibenevolent and kind
Sawm - helps Muslims acknowledge their gratitude for what God has given them, exercises self-discipline, brings Muslims all around the world together, In the quran it says that you may develop “God -consciousness” through fasting
Hajj - Proves dedication to your faith, shows respect to prophet Muhammad ( pbuh ) as he went on pilgrimege shortly before his death and commanded people to do the same, cleanses you of your sins which shows how forgiving and merciful Allah is
Give a reason that each of the 6 articles could be considered important:
Tawhid - highlights Allah as omniscient, if you don’t believe in the oneness of Allah it makes it difficult to believe in any of the other articles, helps Muslims think of Allah as the centrepoint in life, strengthens worship of Allah
Malaikah - Angel Gabriel is the one who delivered the messages to Muhammad ( pbuh ) and angels act of means of communication between god and humanity, believe that angels were created by God before humans, Shias believe that they serve Allah purely out of willingness, solidifying that Allah is a good, powerful ruler
Kutub - these tell Muslims how to lead their lives,
Nubuwwah - Prophets made Allah’s messages more accessible as many couldn’t read or write, Prophet Muhammad ( pbuh ) was the final messenger meaning that Allah felt the prophets had spread his word to a good extent
Akhirah - offers motivation for Muslims to follow the rules of their faith and behave in a way that will get them into Jannah
Al Qadr - it shows that Allah is omniscient, meaning ‘knowing everything’, and omnipotent, makes Muslims more conscious of Allah’s presence making them more likely to lead good lives, alternatively some people may avoid taking accountability and blame Allah for their bad decisions
