Is psychology a science? Flashcards
What is meant by a science?
branch of knowledge developed using objective principles, involving systemised observations +experimentation-founded in empiricsm
How does science rely on falsifiability?
> the aim of science is to a provide hypothesis wrong
there is never a correct theory, just the best one at the time - one that has not been proven incorrect
science works in theories not facts
What is the are the major features of science?
Objectivity
Systematic
Replicable
What is objectivity?
> observations +experiments should be unaffected by bias
What is systematic ?
using a scientific process to test a hypothesis under controlled conditions
What are paradigm shifts?
When alternative theories are suggested and evidence is collected
when enough evidence exists to reject old theory +new theory is accepted the new one does not the scientific paradigm shift.
Is psychology therefore a science?
> because psychology has a lot of paradigm shifts it can be argued that it is not a science
h/w we do not attempt to use scientific method to investigate behaviours
ppl are not chemicals >reaction will never be the same
