Iron/RBC Flashcards
Anemia
Thalassemia
-Increased RBC
-Decreased MCV/MCH
SS Disease
-Increased MCH/MCV
-Decreased RBC, Hgb, Hct
Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia = Drug Causes
-Quinine, quinidine
-Fluroquinolone abx
Macrocytic Anemia
Increased MCV (everything else decreased)
Pernicious anemia = low B12, + schilling test, high MMA
Folate deficiency if low folate
Microcytic Anemia
Decreased MCV
Increased TIBC
= Fe deficient anemia
Cause of iron deficiency in children vs adults
-Dietary intake
-Chronic blood loss
Hemosiderosis
implies iron overload without tissue injury
Hemochromatosis
a condition of iron overload with associated tissue injury
-chronic, excessive absorption of iron
Decreases in Serum Iron
-Iron deficiency
-Inflammatory disorders
-Hemorrhage, blood donation, menstruation
Increases in Serum Iron
-Contraceptives
-Hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis
-Iron poisoning
-Iron medications
-Hepatitis
TIBC in iron deficiency
Increased
TIBC decreased in
inflammation, malignancies, malnutrition
High serum ferritin values are also seen in ____
viral hepatitis (release from iron stores) and in iron storage disease
Cytochemical Staining
-staining of hemosiderin in bone marrow aspirates Prussian blue reaction = gold standard
