Iron Pipe and Fittings Flashcards
Define: Alloy
A Substance composed of 2 or more metals or of a metal and non metal.
The process usually involves fusing and dissolving into each other when molten
Define: Ferrous
A metal that contains iron, may be magnetized or rust when exposed to moist air
Define: Non-ferrous
Metals or products that contain no iron, will not rust and cant be magnetized
Iron Pipe Size
Define: NPS
Nominal Pipe Size - the approximate inside diameter of standard or schedule 40 pipe
Define: PSIG
Pounds Per Square Inch Gauge - includes Air pressure at sea level (14.5psi)
Define: PSIA
Pounds Per Square Inch Absolute - does not include Air pressure at sea level
Wall Thickness: what PSIG would each of these max out at? and how would you Name then by thickness SCH 10 SCH 40 SCH 80 SCH 160
SCH 10 - Thinnest wall
SCH 40 - Standard wall (pressure up to 150 PSIG)
SCH 80 - Extra Heavy (pressure up to 200 PSIG)
SCH 160 - Double extra heavy (pressure up to 1000 PSIG)
Is pipe size based of of OD or IDPipe Size
Pipe size is based off of inside diameter (ID) up to 12”
When pipe size is 14” and larger the pipe size is then based off of outside diameter (OD)
Schedule:
As SCH increases what happens to the pipes ID and OD
As SCH increases ID is reduced and OD is not affected
What is the standard full length of an Iron pipe?
The standard full length of an Iron pipe is 21’
Name 5 different Pipe End Finishes
- Plain
- Threaded
- Threaded with Coupling
- Bevelled
- Grooved
What are parallel thread and give some examples
These threads don’t create a seal
some examples are hose bibbs, ready rod, bolts or Threaded with Coupling ends
A National Pipe Thread (NPT) is?
stated as tapered threads that enlarge at a rate of ¾” per 1’
The angle between the teeth of a thread is?
60 degrees or 30 degrees for 1 tooth
How should you dress threads using t-tape
When applying tape to threads leave the first 2 threads bare, then go in a clockwise rotation around male threads
